SAN DIEGO - In a match that came down to the wire, San Diego State's women's tennis team took down a tough opponent in Arizona, 4-3. The Aztecs were able to take an early lead by winning the doubles point in a battle of a match, which would prove to be an indication of what was to come.
Roxanne and Sierra Ellison were the first doubles team to finish, falling to Danielle Steinberg and Sarah Landsman, 8-3, in second doubles. In first doubles Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk were able to stay undefeated in doubles on the season by downing Natasha Marks and Claire Rietsch, 9-7. Bagshaw and Trunk are now 7-0 in doubles in 2009. In third doubles Esther Cadua and Kathryn Kitts defeated Ariane Masschelein and Jane Huh, 9-8 (3).
After taking the doubles point SDSU was out in front 1-0. The fourth singles match would be the first to finish with Olivia Colman falling to Landsman, 6-0, 6-2. In second singles Bagshaw picked up her second win of the day by picking up a decision over Masschelein, 6-4, 6-0, and taking the Aztecs' lead to 2-1.
Despite Trunk falling to Steinberg in first singles, 6-2, 7-5, Milana Yusupov was able to maintain the lead for San Diego State by fighting for a win in fifth singles over Huh, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Sierra Ellison was unable to clinch the victory for SDSU in sixth singles eventually falling to Debora Castany, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2, which would once again tie the score.
All eyes would turn to third singles where Emma Cioffi, in her first official match as an Aztec, would put up a fight for the decision. Cioffi was able to pull out a victory over No.124 Marks, the Wildcats only ranked player, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4, claiming the win for SDSU.
Up next for San Diego State is a trip to USC where the Aztecs will face the Trojans on Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. PT.
