SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis took down UC Irvine Thursday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center, 6-1. Thursday's win is the second in a week for the Aztecs and takes SDSU's record to 4-4 on the season.
With wins in second and third doubles San Diego State captured the doubles point. Juan Gomez and Bartosz Golas defeated Jon Kazarian and Zac Tsai in second doubles, 8-4. In third doubles Luis Rattenhuber and Jordan Colman downed Steven Henderson and Gautam Vaidyanathan also by the same score, 8-4. Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti fell in first doubles to Wes Miller and Khunpol Issara, 8-4.
Tim Schulz van Endert took a loss in fifth singles to Fabian Matthews, 6-4, 6-0, which would be the Anteaters only singles victory on the day. Vaglietti was the next to finish, with the sophomore picking up his first win of the day over Issara, 7-6 (3), 6-0. Gomez defeated Henderson, 6-2, 6-2, in second doubles. Golas, San Diego State's lone senior, would clinch the match for the Aztecs by taking down Sam Gould, 6-2, 6-1, in third singles. Rattenhuber picked up a decision over Tyler Bowman, 6-2, 6-4, in sixth singles. In the last match to finish of the day, Ceban was able to top Miller in first singles, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
"Our team came out with a lot of heart and was able to overcome a very motivated squad in UC Irvine," said San Diego State head coach Gene Carswell. "This was another complete team effort."
Up next for the Aztecs is a trip to Fresno State to face the Bulldogs on Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. PT.
