SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team will join the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and over a thousand schools nationally in the organization's WBCA Pink Zone initiative on Saturday, Feb. 21, when it plays host to the University of New Mexico at Cox Arena for a 2 p.m. PT tip-off.
The WBCA's Pink Zone initiative is designed to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball on campuses and in communities. The time period set aside for this year's initiative is February 13-22. The specific message behind Saturday's contest will be to raise breast cancer awareness, promote early detection and celebrate breast cancer survivors.
As a part of this year's WBCA Pink Zone contest, both the Aztecs and Lobos will be wearing pink shooting shirts prior to the game, while SDSU will also don pink headbands. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure office in San Diego will have an information booth on the arena concourse to learn more about breast cancer and will be accepting donations.
As a part of this special promotion for Saturday's contest, anyone wearing pink to the game will receive a general admission ticket for only $4. Free WBCA Pink Zone t-shirts will also be handed out to the first 300 fans.
Donations will also be collected at the game for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which is named after former North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow, who lost her fight with breast cancer earlier this year. Checks made payable to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund - V Foundation (put Pink Zone in memo line), can also be mailed to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, 106 Towerview Court, Cary, N.C. 27513. All donations are tax deductible.
"We're excited to celebrate the WBCA Pink Zone initiative, along with everyone else across America, this Saturday," Aztec head coach Beth Burns said. "I was fortunate enough to be an assistant to Kay Yow at North Carolina State, so this day is nearer and dearer to me. We're going to celebrate this weekend - celebrate her life, as well as all the lives of those who have battled this disease and hopefully, come one step closer to finding a cure for it."
