SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games against nationally ranked foes on the final day of the 19th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium on Sunday. The Aztecs (4-5), who are tied for 24th in the latest USA Today/NFCA national poll, fell to No. 8/8 Stanford, 9-2, and then to No. 24 (ESPN.com/USA Softball) Long Beach State, 3-2.
SDSU left 16 runners on base over the two contests, including a season-high 11 in the nightcap against the 49ers (4-4).
In that game, Long Beach State got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Jonae Perez scored on a San Diego State throwing error. An RBI single by Jennifer Griffin in the fifth that scored Danielle Linke made it 2-0 in favor of the 49ers.
The Aztecs battled back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning after a sacrifice fly by senior All-American Erin Floros (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) scored junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS).
SDSU tried to tie it in the next inning but failed to score on four chances with runners in scoring position.
The 49ers took a 3-1 lead in the seventh as Kristen Pocock's two-out single to left field scored Griffin.
San Diego State closed within a run in the final inning when sophomore Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.), who reached on a fielding error, scored on a throwing error by Griffin a third base. However, the Aztecs were unable to get the tying run across once again and had to settle for their second consecutive one-run loss to Long Beach State.
Floros had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense.
Sophomore Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (2-3) took the loss after scattering two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out four.
In the opener, the eighth-ranked Cardinal (8-1) scored nine unanswered runs en route to the 9-2 triumph.
SDSU had taken an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The first run came when junior Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS) scored on an infield single by sophomore Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.). The second score came when redshirt senior Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) reached home on a throwing error by the Stanford catcher.
The Cardinal answered with three runs in the fourth, two coming on a home run by Rosey Neill, and another on an RBI single by Maddy Coon.
Stanford tacked on five more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Coon's two-run homer and a two-run single by Ashley Hansen, and a final score in the sixth (Alissa Haber RBI double).
Beasley was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits over four innings. She struck out six and walked one. Micetich pitched the final three frames and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk.
The Aztecs will look to get back on the winning track next weekend when they travel to Lafayette, La., for the fifth annual Mardi Gras Classic. SDSU will begin its weekend with a game against Kentucky at 11 a.m. CT.
