CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team is tied with four other schools for eighth place after 18 holes at the spring season-opening Aztec Invitational Sunday. The host Aztecs posted a 16-over 304 to tie with Texas Tech, Colorado, New Mexico State and Hawai'i at the par-72, 6,187-yard Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista, Calif.

SDSU was led by senior Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.), who fired a first-round 73 to tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard. Her first round 73 is also the lowest 18-hole score of the 2008-09 season. Wilson was joined in the top 20 by true freshman Malin Enarsson (Gothenburd, Sweden), who sits one shot back at 2-over par 74 in a tie for 19th place.

Senior Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) finished her first 18 holes at 6-over-par 78, good enough to land her in a tie for 53rd position. Sophomore Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) shot a first-round score of 79, while classmate Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) is two strokes behind Roberts with an 81 in her first 18 holes of the spring.

The SDSU individuals competing include junior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.), who shot a 5-over par 77 to finish the first day in a tie for 40th place. Sophomore Kaitlen Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii) and freshman Casey McIntosh (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) are tied for 53rd place with first-round scores of 78, while junior Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) is two strokes behind them with an 80 in her first round of 2009. Rounding out the individual competitors for the Aztecs are sophomore Faith DeGuzman (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and senior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), who each shot 82 and 84 respectively.

UC Irvine, which entered the tournament ranked 24th nationally, leads the team race by one stroke over San Jose State with a 287. The Anteaters were the only team to finish the first 18 holes of play under par. UC Irvine's Hillary Packard is atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under par 68.

San Diego State will be paired with Hawai'i and New Mexico State for the second round Monday morning, teeing off from the 10th hole beginning at 7:45 a.m. PT. Live scoring will be available on GoAztecs.com.
