LARAMIE, Wyo. - - The San Diego State women's basketball team's struggles in Laramie continued, as the Aztecs were outlasted by Wyoming, 64-61, Sunday at Arena-Auditorium. The loss ended a four-game win streak, as SDSU fell to 17-6 overall and 8-3 in conference action, while Wyoming, which attempted 29 free throws to the Aztecs' nine, improved to 12-11, 4-6 MWC.
Aztec sophomore Paris Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) had 15 points, six rebounds and six blocks, including five in the first half alone. Sophomore guard Coco Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) tallied 10 points and also tallied six boards, while Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 13 points.
The Aztecs took the early 2-0 lead, but had turnovers on three of their first four possessions and trailed by as many as five early at 9-4. The two sides traded leads on four more occasions within the first 13 and a half minutes with SDSU going up by a pair at 18-16 heading into the third media timeout.
Wyoming, behind Hilary Carlson's seven straight points, reclaimed the slight lead at 25-22. Aztec Jerica Williams, however, hit her first three-pointer in the last three games, knocking down a pair of back-to-back triples to put the visitor's back in front by three, 28-25.
Both schools hit two buckets apiece in the final two minutes, as SDSU held a three-point advantage heading into the locker room, 32-29.
Coming out of the break, the Cowgirls tied the game at 34-34 and took the lead on an and one opportunity at 39-38. Wyoming increased its advantage out to three on three occasions, before a Coco Davis triple from the right angle knotted the afternoon again at 45-45.
That three-pointer kick started a 9-0 Aztec run with as SDSU got its biggest lead at 51-45, before Wyoming finally found the scoreboard with a pair of free throws. The Cowgirls, who entered the single bonus with over nine minutes left, crept back into the contest with six free throws and a three-pointer to close to within one with a pair at 56-54.
The game came down to the final minute as the Aztecs trailed by two points and were unable to convert on offense, falling 64-61, as Wyoming got their 44th rebound of the outing to close out the SDSU threat.
The Aztecs shot 47.3 percent from the field and had 14 steals, but were outrebounded 44-25.
Wyoming was led by Carlson's 18 points and nine rebounds before fouling out of the game with 1:47 left.
