SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego State softball team split a pair of games Saturday night at the 19th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (4-3), who are tied for 24th in the nation in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll, began the night with a 5-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara before dropping a 5-0 decision to No. 10/7 Washington in the nightcap.

In the first game, SDSU overcame an early 1-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning en route to the 5-1 triumph. The big inning, which all came with two outs, began when senior All-American Erin Floros (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) lined a double off the left field wall to plate junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS), who had reached with a walk. After freshman pinch-runner Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) replaced Floros on second and moved to third on a wild pitch, senior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) came through with her second triple in as many games to give San Diego State its first lead at 2-1. Redshirt Taryin Casillas (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont HS) then drilled her eighth career homer (eighth on SDSU career list) to put the game away.

The Aztecs tacked on another score in the sixth when Knudsen doubled home sophomore Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.).

The five runs were plenty for sophomore pitcher Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS). Beasley (2-1), pitching in her first game since Sunday, struck out a season-high nine batters against two walks. She allowed seven hits, including a solo homer by Keilani Jennings in the third, over seven innings.

McCorkle, Casillas and freshman Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) each had two hits to lead the offense.

In the nightcap, SDSU managed just two hits and couldn't get over one bad inning in a 5-0 loss to the Huskies (8-0).

Washington, which is ranked No. 7 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and No. 10 by USA Today/NFCA, scraped together four scores in the third on a two-run double, single and a bases loaded walk. The Huskies then added another run in the final frame on a solo home run by Ashley Charters.

San Diego State freshman pitcher Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings. Six of her eight outs were strikeouts. Beasley tossed the final 4 1/3 innings of relief and gave up one run on four hits a two walks, while striking out five.

On the other side, Washington's Danielle Lawrie pitched a complete game two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

In another change to the tournament schedule, the Aztecs will meet No. 8/8 Stanford at 9 a.m. Sunday before playing rv/No. 24 Long Beach State at 2 p.m.
