SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis team emerged victorious Tuesday evening as the Aztecs took down the 40th-ranked Pepperdine Waves, 4-3. The match was a showdown between the two schools that came down to the very last match at first singles.
SDSU took the doubles point from Pepperdine with first and third singles matches picking up their decisions. In third singles, Kathryn Kitts and Esther Cadua were the first to finish defeating Zlatka Petrova and Tania Rice, 8-3. Dropping their decision against Anamika Bhargava and Alex Liles, Roxanne and Sierra Ellison fell, 8-5, in second doubles. Having yet to drop a single decision this season in first doubles, Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk clinched the doubles point by downing Alexandria Walters and Jill Braverman, 9-8 (4).
Cadua was unable to bring down Braverman in third singles falling, 6-3, 6-1. Bagshaw picked up her second win of the day by defeating Walters in second singles, 6-4, 6-3. In fourth singles, Milana Yusupov fell to Liles, 6-3, 6-4. With Olivia Colman dropping a decision to Andrea Oates in fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2, San Diego State left behind Pepperdine 3-2 with two matches left to finish.
Roxanne Ellison battled Petrova in sixth singles ultimately taking the match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, and leaving the Aztecs and Waves all tied up 3-3. The match came down to Trunk and Bhargava in first singles with both women fighting for their respective teams. Julia Trunk left the courts victorious defeating her opponent, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
With the win San Diego State is 5-1 on the season. Up next for the Aztecs is Long Beach State at home on Friday, Feb. 13.
