SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's men's tennis team travels to the Lone Star State to participate in the ITA Kickoff Tournament. The Aztecs will first face Georgia Tech on Friday, Jan. 30 at noon CT. Depending on the outcome of the first match SDSU will then take on either Baylor or Utah.
The Aztecs will first meet No. 58 Georgia Tech (2-1) in the Friday match. The Yellow Jackets' are led by No. 14 Guillermo Gomez and freshman Kevin King. Although unranked, King has started his 2009 season with a 6-0 record.
San Diego State's meeting with Georgia Tech is only the second between the two schools. The Aztecs took the first meeting in 1991 with the score of 5-2. The winner of Friday's match will face the Baylor-Utah winner on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT, while the two defeated teams will meet in the consolation match on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT.
SDSU defeated Baylor in the only previous meeting between the two schools in 2000 with the score of 4-3. The 10th-ranked Bears, who are led by four ranked singles players, are looking to extend their three match home win streak. Baylor is coming off a Jan. 18 loss to Florida.The tournament in Texas will be the first time that Utah is on the road this year. The Utes are 3-0 in 2009 and are led by senior Wes Hancock who is also 3-0 this spring.
Following the ITA Kickoff Tournament, SDSU will travel to Chicago to participate in the National Team Indoor Championships beginning on Feb. 13. The Aztecs will return home on Feb. 17 to take on San Diego in their spring home opener.
