Scouting the Rainbow Wahine
Hawai'i will open its spring 2009 season against San Diego State on Thursday, after finishing its 2008 season with an overall record of 6-17.
Jun Hernandez enters his 3rd season as the head coach of the Rainbow Wahine. Hernandez, a SDSU alum, played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Aztecs in 1994.

Series History vs. Hawai'i
San Diego State leads the all-time series with Hawai'i by a 7-0 count. In 2006, the two teams met for the first time since 2003, with the Aztecs pulling out a 4-3 victory in Honolulu. SDSU defeated the Rainbow Wahine last season by a score of 6-1 on the Mesa.

Scouting the Anteaters
UC Irvine head coach Mike Edles enters his 12th year at the helm of the Anteaters' women's tennis program. UCI finished their 2008 season with a record of 16-9.
Returning to the team are senior Clare Fermin who earned all-Big West honorable mention honors in singles as well as in doubles with sophomore Rebecca Kwan. Seniors Heidi Kaloi, Ali Borowicz and sophomore Brooke Bartlett helped UCI finish with a No. 62 national ranking a year ago.

Aztecs in the Polls
San Diego State enters the 2009 campaign unranked in the nation according to the first FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released Jan. 6 by the Intercollegiate Collegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The Coaches
Peter Mattera enters his 28th season at San Diego State and 16th as head coach of the Scarlet and Black. In 15 seasons, the Aztecs' mentor has guided SDSU to 10 postseason appearances, compiling a record of 230-159 (.589) in the process. Equally impressive is the fact that 13 of his 15 squads have finished with an overall record of .500 or better despite playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation on an annual basis.
Lindsey Gamp begins her fourth season as the Aztecs' assistant coach. A four-year letterwinner at SDSU (2000-03), Gamp played on three NCAA tournament teams and guided the Aztecs to a pair of Mountain West Conference regular season titles and a MWC championship crown in 2003.

Fall Highlights
San Diego State had many outstanding individual performances during the fall season. Freshman Sierra Ellison made an impressive run during the SDSU Fall Classic II by reaching the championship final and claiming the Singles - C title.
Sophomore Julia Trunk leads the team as the only nationally ranked player. Trunk is currently ranked No. 93 in women's singles.

2007-08 Review
SDSU finished the 2008 dual-match campaign with a 11-13 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference.

There's No Place Like Home
Since the opening of the Aztec Tennis Center in 2005, SDSU has won 68 percent of its home matches, posting a 35-14 record. All 14 defeats have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 60.
