SAN DIEGO - Colleen Evans, San Diego State's Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services and has been appointed to serve as a member of the NCAA Division I Initial-Eligibility Waivers Committee.

"This committee will be reviewing and making decisions regarding initial eligibility waivers," said Evans. "I am pleased to have been selected for this important committee."

The NCAA Division I Initial-Eligibility Waivers Committee is comprised of 20 members from college universities across the country. The committee is charged with reviewing and making decisions about initial eligibility waivers with regards to the definition of core courses, international student issues and exceptions due to learning disabilities. They must also be experts in high school core-course requirements and transcript change.

Evans has been appointed to the core-course review subcommittee. Evans will serve as a member beginning Jan. 1, 2009, and continue through Jan. 1, 2013.

The Student Athlete Academic Support Services has been developed at SDSU to assist all student-athletes in achieving academic excellence. Throughout the academic year, advisors offer a variety of services to aid student-athletes in the development of their personal goals and the blueprint for pursuing those goals.

In the fall of 2001, the academic department moved into the new 130,000-square-foot Aztec Athletics Center. Here, student-athletes have access to advisors, tutors and mentors, as well as a 40-station computer lab, individual study rooms and two lecture rooms.

In addition to Evans, SDSU Director of Athletics, Jeff Schemmel, was selected to serve as a chair on another NCAA committee this past June. Schemmel serves on the NCAA Championships and Sports Management Cabinet, which directly oversees nearly every NCAA Division I championship. The Cabinet is one of six committees that make up the restructures NCAA Governance Structure.
