The San Diego State University Department of Athletics and the Aztec Athletic Foundation (AAF) are hosting a golf fundraiser to benefit all 18 varsity sports at SDSU. The inaugural Aztec Invitational is scheduled for Monday, May 19, at Maderas Golf Club in Poway, Calif., with many former Aztec greats participating in the tournament.
Among the Aztec legends expected to attend are Billy Blanton, Willie Buchanon, Michael Cage, Don Coryell, Mike Douglass, Fred Dryer, Steve Duich, Marshall Faulk, Gary Garrison, Claude Gilbert, Don Horn, Claudie Minor, Haven Moses, Todd Santos, Dennis Shaw, Brian Sipe, Tim Vezie and Ed White. In addition, current San Diego State head coaches and student-athletes will be on hand to participate in the activities.
"This will be a special day on the golf course," said SDSU director of athletics Jeff Schemmel. "Past Aztec legends are excited to give back to their university and this will make for a unique experience for our fans that come out to participate in the Aztec Invitational."
Sponsorships begin at $3,000 and include an invitation to a pairings party where sponsors will receive priority selection for their Aztec legend golf partner. Two foursome options will also be available for other participating golfers. Players may create their own foursome for $350 each ($1,400 total) or choose a threesome and be paired with an Aztec legend for $500 each ($1,500 total).
The tournament features a 1 p.m. shotgun start, culminating with an awards reception and a $100,000 shoot-out contest. The winners of the four Closest-to-the-Pin contests to be held on the course and two raffle winners will have the opportunity to sink a shot for $100,000.
All proceeds from this event will benefit the educational advancement of the more than 500 student-athletes competing in intercollegiate athletics at San Diego State University.
