SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team has signed four newcomers to National Letters of Intent, Kathy Van Wyk has announced. The talented players, who will join SDSU in the fall of 2009, include Tanya Holguin (Sacramento, Calif./Woodland HS), Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS), Kamerin May (Norco, Calif./Santiago HS) and Kristin May (Norco, Calif./Santiago HS).
"We are extremely excited about this year's recruiting class.," Van Wyk said. "All four signees have the ability to be immediate impact players. We added to our pitching depth and picked up some very strong hitters as well."
Holguin, a three-time all-Tri-County League selection, lettered three years at Inderkum High as a third baseman and a pitcher. Holguin, who will play at Woodland HS in the 2009 spring season, was also named to the Sacramento Bee All-Metro team for the past three years.
Last year, Holguin batted .385 with three home runs, 19 RBI and 17 stolen bases. As a pitcher, Holguin posted a 1.19 ERA in 58 2/3 innings. As a sophomore in 2007, Holguin batted .571 with a slugging percentage of .971, while owning an impressive 28-game hit streak.
Jackson, the lone recruit from outside the state of California, wrapped up a fine career in the fall when she was selected to the Missouri all-State Class 3 First Team, all-Region 4 First Team and all-Metro Missouri Softball First Team, each for the third consecutive season. In 102 career games at Archbishop O'Hara, Jackson batted .517 with 24 home runs and 140 RBI, while owning an impressive 71.3 on-base percentage and 89.5 slugging percentage.
Jackson set 16 school records at Archbishop O'Hara, including career marks in batting average, hits, RBI, doubles, runs, home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and walks. Jackson also has excelled in club ball, including stints with KC Zephyrs Gold, 18U KC White Sox and the 14U Olathe Rockets.
Rounding out the recruiting class are twin sisters Kamerin and Kristin May, who both excelled at Santiago High in Norco, Calif., and for the Corona Angles 18 Gold club team.
Kamerin, a pitcher and first baseman, comes to The Mesa as one of the top talents in recent memory. After her 2008 junior season, she garnered first-team EA Sports All-American honors after posting a 26-5 record in the circle with a 0.73 ERA, 311 strikeouts and 17 shutouts. She also batted .400 with six home runs and 30 RBI.
Over her career, Kamerin has garnered Cal-Hi Sports first-team all-state honors on three occasions, and first-team all-CIF-SS Division I accolades and all-Mountain View League MVP honors twice, while being named the state freshman softball player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports. A scholar-athlete, Kamerin has gone 71-15 with 856 strikeouts over her three years of high school.
Kristin, who plays catcher and third base, has a three-year average of over .350, with seven homers and 61 RBI. She as earned first-team all-Mountain Valley League honors the past three seasons, while leading Santiago HS to two league titles.
A scholar-athlete, Kristin has been named to the Press Enterprise all-Riverside County team as an honorable-mention selection each of the past three years. In addition, Kristin was selected to a second-team all-CIF-SS Division I pick after her 2007 sophomore campaign.
The four newcomers will be called upon to replace current seniors Taryin Casillas, Erin Floros, Christine Kulick, Tonye McCorkle and Dani Sidoti, all who have been starters over their time at SDSU.
The Aztecs kick off their 2009 schedule on Feb. 6 against Indiana at UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles.
