SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's golf head coach Felicia Brown announced the signing Thursday of Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) and Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) to National Letters of Intent. The two will join the Aztecs next fall.
Clark is a senior at Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, Calif., where she helped lead the Nighthawks to their fourth-straight top-nine finish at the CIF Southern Section Central Divisional last month. Clark is the first golfer in her school's history to advance to the CIF Women's Southern California Golf Association Regional, carding a 76 in her final high school event in 2008.
"Gina comes to us with Aztec pride already in her heart," Brown said. "She has a lot of talent and the heart to match it. I think she will make an outstanding contribution to this team."
A four-year letterwinner, who didn't start playing golf until high school, Clark served as Murrieta's team captain in 2008 and is a two-time all-league pick, as well as an all-Valley selection as a junior.
"I have wanted to come to SDSU since I was a freshman," Clark said. "I love San Diego so much and it was the only (Div. I) school in the area with a women's golf team. I started looking into the program and the school and found that this is exactly where I wanted to go. I could not be happier!"
Clark has twice qualified for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships and has previously been named the California Junior Tour Player of the Series. She won the Challenge Tour event at Woods Valley Golf Club in Valley Center, Calif., and came in second at the Bear Creek Golf Club junior club championships.
Wong is a heavily decorated junior golfer from Richmond, British Columbia, which is located south of Vancouver. She attends McMath Secondary school where she is a member of the Wildcats' golf team and a four-year captain. As a junior, she shot a career-low 67 in her final tournament of the season, and as a sophomore, she ended up first at the AAA provincial championship.
"I think Christine will contribute immediately to the continuing progress this team is making," Brown said. "She has experience on the national level back in Canada, and I think she has all the ingredients to make an exceptional collegiate player."
Last summer, Wong won the Girls Junior Americas Cup in Calgary and placed third at the British Columbia Provincial Championship. She was fourth at the Girls Canadian Junior Championship and broke the course record at the B.C. Summer Games, firing a 64 at the par-73 Kelowna Golf and Country Club. Wong earned an invitation to the Canada Games Training Camp in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
In 2007, she was the runner up at the Girls Canadian Junior Championship and was fourth at the B.C. Provincial tournament. Her solid play earned her a spot at the Aaron Baddeley International Junior Championship in Guanzhou, China in December.
"San Diego is a beautiful city with people who make you feel welcome and the weather is just a bonus," Wong said. "The campus reminds me of a typical California school that I have always dreamed of with palm trees and sun shining all day. Not only is it the school that I'd pictured, but I feel more opportunities are waiting to be seeked at San Diego State."
The Aztecs begins their 2009 spring campaign on Feb. 16, when they plays host to the Aztec Invitational at the Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista, Calif.
