SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Nick Cardenas (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) has been named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Far West Region Second Team. It is the third straight season the junior has earned all-Far West Region honors after being picked as a third-team selection last year and a second-team choice in 2006.
Cardenas became the first Aztec to be named to three straight NSCAA all-Far West teams since Kyle Whittemore did so four consecutive years from 1985-88.
A defender who has anchored a backline which has posted 18 shutouts over his three-year career, Cardenas tallied a career-high four assists in 2008 while leading the team in minutes played (1,646). Cardenas, who was on the 2008 preseason M.A.C. Hermann Award Watch List, also earned all-Pac-10 second-team accolades for the third consecutive season.
San Diego State finished the season with a 6-9-3 overall record, including a 3-4-3 mark in the Pac-10. Seven of San Diego State's 13 opponents made the NCAA tournament, with three earning seeds in the tourney.
