SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's cross country and track and field teams gave back to the San Diego community when they participated in the 5th annual San Diego Dollars for Scholars 5K walk on Oct. 25. The Aztecs led the warm-up exercises to prepare participants for the walk around the SDSU campus.

"My thanks go out to the women's track team," said Robyn Adams, coordinator of SDSU Student Organizations, Student Activities and Campus Life. "I really appreciated their energy and willingness to volunteer at the event. They did a great job."

The walk began early Saturday morning at Scripps College for registration and the start of the race. Participants gathered for the 5K walk and then enjoyed a college fair, entertainment and raffle prizes.

"All of our student-athletes give back to the community in any way they can," said Bre White, Director of Academic Services for SDSU's Athletic Department. "This is just one of the many events that our athletes participated in this fall."

With ever-increasing costs for postsecondary education, the Dollars for Scholars foundation was developed in 1958 to create and support community-based, volunteer-led scholarship groups. The first four walks in San Diego have raised over $425,000 for scholarships for San Diego students. Dollars for Scholars chapter volunteers keep 100 percent of what they raise to contribute to their scholarship programs.

Each year more scholarship funds are raised through the efforts of walkers and sponsors. Over 450 high school students, parents, school administrators, community college and college volunteers and sponsors participated in the walk.
