KAHUKU, Hawaii - San Diego State, which entered third-round action in a tie for first place with Mountain West Conference member UNLV, could not emerge from the pack despite shooting a combined 10-under 278 over the final 18 holes and finished in second place at 18-under par (846) at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. Texas, meanwhile, overcame a two-stroke deficit heading into the day and posted a final round 15-under 273 en route to the winning total of 843 (-21).

Sophomore Johan Carlsson was SDSU's top performer over 54 holes, finishing in a tie for third place at 7-under par (209). His effort was his second top-3 performance and his 4th top-18 finish of the young 2008-09 season. On Wednesday, Carlsson recorded an even-par 72 on Turtle Bay's Fazio Course.

Freshman Andrew Cooley, who was the first-round leader, finished in a tie for 14th place with his 4-under 212. Like Carlsson, Cooley rebounded nicely from his second-round 74 to fire an even-par 72. The first-year player from England wraps up fall play with his third top-15 effort of the year.

One stroke back of Cooley was Matt Hoffenberg in a tie for 18th place. The sophomore posted a 3-under 69 to finish the tournament at 3-under par (213). Hoffenberg's third-round score was second on the team to only freshman Alex Kang's 66 (-6).

Kang, who matched Cooley's first-round score for SDSU's lowest of the tournament, logged his best single-round score in relation to par of his young Aztec career. Prior to Wednesday, Kang's personal-best 5-under 67 occurred during the first round of the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in October. After finishing in a tie for 31st (1-under 215), Kang has now finished in the top 32 in each of the three tournaments he has competed in this fall.

Another freshman in J.J. Spaun also notched a solid third-round effort with his 1-under 71. With his performance, Spaun was able to finish with a score of 2-over 218 to sit in a tie for 42nd place.

San Diego State will now take the rest of the winter off before getting back into the swing of things on Feb. 2 when it competes in the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
