KAHUKU, Hawaii - San Diego State freshman Andrew Cooley shot a 6-under 66 and the Aztecs shot a combined 11-under 277 after 18 holes of play to end the day in first place at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate on Monday. Cooley is currently tied for first with Texas' Adam Wennerstrom, while SDSU, as a team, owns a three-stroke lead over the Longhorns and Texas-Arlington (280; -8). Round one was contested at Turtle Bay Resort's par 72, 6,535-yard Fazio Course and will move over to Turtle Bay's Palmer Course (par 72, 7,218 yards) for second-round action.
Cooley was one of three Aztecs to shoot under par for the day after posting a 34 over the first nine holes and then a 32 to close out the round en route to his 66. His 6-under performance ties his second-round effort at the Sycuan Collegiate for SDSU's lowest round of the season in relation to par.
In a tie for sixth place and two shots off the pace is Johan Carlsson. The sophomore all-Southwest Region pick from a year ago fired a pair of 34s to enter the clubhouse with a 4-under 68, while classmate Matt Hoffenberg shot a 2-under 70 to find himself in a 13-way tie for 13th place.
Cooley's freshman teammates J.J. Spaun and Alex Kang also turned in solid rounds of 1-over (73). Spaun carded a 37 over the first nine and rebounded with a 36 on the final nine, while Kang went 39 and 34 on the way to his day one total. Both are tied for 45th place in a field of 105 players.
The tournament resumes tomorrow with round two beginning at 7:30 a.m. HT.
