DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - The San Diego State men's golf team recorded its third top-10 fall campaign performance in as many tries with its third-place finish at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate in Daufuskie Island, S.C. The Aztecs, who were led by freshman J.J. Spaun's 8-over 224 (t-7th), shot a combined 37-over 901 to end the tournament behind team champion and No. 22 South Carolina (+15; 879) and Georgia State (+37; 900) at the Jones Signature Course at Haig Point Club (par 72; 7,380 yards).
For the first time in his young SDSU career, Spaun was San Diego State's top performer over 54 holes. The freshman from San Dimas, Calif., started the day in a tie for 22nd place before firing a 1-over 73 to vault 15 spots and into a tie for seventh.
Finishing just outside the top 10 was senior Bryan Martin, who completed play in a tie for 11th place. The transfer from Loyola Marymount ended with a three-round total of 10-over 226 after shooting a 78 over the final 18 holes.
One stroke behind Martin was Andrew Cooley in a tie for 15th place at 11-over 227. The freshman from England struggled on Tuesday shooting an 80 after posting a second-round score of 1-under 71. Joining the aforementioned trio in the top 20 was 42nd-ranked Johan Carlsson after he notched a tied-for-18th-place finish with his 12-over 228. The sophomore posted a 78 to maintain his placing entering final-round action.
Senior David Palm was one of three Aztecs on the day to move up on the final leaderboard over the course of the final 18 after he shot a 7-over 79 to shave off three strokes from his second-round 82. Palm entered the day in a tie for 34th and ultimately finished in a tie for 31st with an 18-over 234.
San Diego State returns to the links on Nov. 10 when they open first-round play at the Turtle Bay Resort Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii.
