TULSA, Okla. - San Diego State senior Bartosz Golas won his second-round qualifying singles match and junior Juan Gomez dropped a three-set heartbreaker on Tuesday at the 2008 D'Novo ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Golas, who defeated 29th-seeded Vijay Paul of Vanderbilt on Monday, returned to the court to down Columbia's Jonathan Wong in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, on Tuesday morning. Golas now moves on to the third round to face Raony Carvalho of Texas Tech where he will play for the right to advance to the main draw. First serve is set for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. CT.
Gomez, meanwhile, fell to 10th-seeded Mathieu Thibaudeau of Alabama after breezing through the first set 6-2. Unfortunately for Gomez, who was playing his fourth singles match in three days, could not get the break he needed in the second or third sets as he dropped each by 6-3 scores.
Later in the day, the Aztec duo teamed up and faced seventh-seeded Kean Feeder and Clancy Shields of Boise State in the first round of qualifying doubles. Golas and Gomez immediately found themselves down in the match and fought back to tie the score at 4-4. The pair used that momentum gained and carried it over to the next game where they were victorious to pull ahead 5-4 only to have BSU tie it in the ensuing game.
With the score knotted at 5, Gomez lost a break to make it 6-5 in favor of Boise State and the Broncos later held serve and broke the Aztec serve to claim the 8-5 decision.
The two losses today for Gomez wraps up a successful tournament for the junior from Guayaquil, Ecuador. Gomez navigated his way through singles pre-qualifying as a seeded player and went 2-1 after receiving a first-round bye. His only blemish was to second-seeded Josh Zavala of Texas, but was awarded a Lucky Loser berth into the qualifying singles draw thanks to his seeding and advancement to the fourth round of pre-qualifying. In Monday's first round of qualifying, Gomez shook up the bracket by defeating Julian Bley of national power Baylor in straight sets before falling in three sets today.
