The San Diego State women's tennis team opened the 2008-09 tournament season in impressive fashion with a pair of doubles victories and five individuals advancing in the main draw of their respective singles brackets on the first day of the annual SDSU Fall Classic at Aztec Tennis Center.
The three-day tournament features individual competition and no team scoring with two groups of doubles and four groups of singles.
Doubles action got underway in the morning as the Scarlet and Black was victorious in two of its three matches. In the red group, senior Holly Bagshaw and sophomore Julia Trunk combined for SDSU's first triumph of the day, outlasting Ariane Masschelein and Deborah Castany of Arizona, 8-5. With the win, the Aztec duo advanced to the semifinals where they will take on Michigan's Whitney Taney and Tania Mahtami on Saturday. In the same bracket, the Aztec freshman sister duo of Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison fell to Samantha Mouly and Juliette Coupez of the University of San Diego, 8-2.
Over in the black group, seniors Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov moved on in the main draw with a hard-fought 8-4 victory over Justine Perl and Marite Raygada of USD.
In the black group of singles action, Bagshaw defeated USD's Maja Sujica, 7-5, 6-0, in the first round. In the same bracket, Trunk was unable to hold on after taking an early one-set lead as she eventually dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision to Michigan's Denise Muresan. On Saturday, Bagshaw will face Masschelein (Arizona) in the semifinal round, while Trunk will square off against another Wildcat, Danielle Steinberg, in the back draw.
Cadua downed Raygada, 6-2, 6-1, in the blue group and will battle Rika Tatsuno (Michigan) in a semifinal match tomorrow. Yusupov, meanwhile, will play in the consolation draw of the same bracket after suffering a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Michigan's Tania Mahtami.
Over in the red group, sophomore Olivia Colman outlasted Justine Perl of USD, 7-5,4-6, 6-0, while Roxanne Ellison picked up her first collegiate victory, claiming a convincing 6-2, 6-4 decision against USD's Milou Teeling. Both Colman and Ellison will play their semifinal matches on Saturday afternoon.
Wrapping up the first day of the tournament was Sierra Ellison, who won her first collegiate match in dramatic fashion, defeating Kari Wig of Michigan, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-0. Ellison will take on Arizona's Castany in the finals of the four-person green bracket tomorrow.
The SDSU Fall Classic will resume on Saturday, Oct. 4, with doubles play starting at 9 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
