KAPOLEI, Hawaii -
Playing in its final tournament of the fall season, the San Diego State women's golf team stands eighth overall through 36 holes Tuesday at the Kent Youel Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii. The Aztecs carded a 310 in the first round, before rallying for a 291 to jump five slots on the team leaderboard at 25-over 601, just two strokes behind seventh place Oregon State at the par-72, 6,208-yard Kapolei Golf Course.
SDSU has two golfers in the top 25 individually, including freshman Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.). Enarsson, who has been the Aztecs' top golfer in each of the previous three fall events, is tied for ninth place at 2-over 146, including a second round 72.
It was Arcala, however, who posted the biggest highlight for the Aztecs on day one. After recording a first round 81, she recovered to fire a 5-under 67, a career best by five strokes, the second-best round of the day out of the 81-golfer field and the best 18 holes by an Aztec since Jenna Wilson also had a 67 at the 2003 Lady Aztec Invitational. It is the third time this season that an SDSU golfer has finished with a sub-70 score. Arcala is currently in a tie for 21st place at 4-over 148, a career-best for 36 holes by four strokes.
Two of the team's other three golfers both improved their scores in the second round, including freshman Casey McIntosh (Rancho Mirage, Calif.), who is tied for 50th place with a 156, and junior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.), who is tied for 65th with a 158. Sophomore Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) began the tournament with a first round 75, but posted an 81 in the afternoon to end up in 55th place at 12-over 156.
USF currently leads the 15-school field by a healthy margin of 11 strokes with a 5-under 571 over second place New Mexico. UC Irvine's Jane Chin is at 10-under through 36 holes, three better than Christina Stockton of USF.
San Diego State will start the final round of the tournament and of its fall campaign on Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. HT with a shotgun start for the final 18 holes.
