SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team defeated Air Force, 205-95, and New Mexico, 170-130, but fell to Colorado State (170.5-129.5) in a Mountain West Conference quad meet at the Aztec Aquaplex on Saturday afternoon.
SDSU earned its third straight victory over Air Force, while beating UNM for the first time since the 2003-04 season. With the two wins, the Aztecs evened their overall and MWC dual-meet record to 2-2.
The Scarlet and Black got off to a good start with the quartet of Brooke Vessey, Jeanette Engzell, Elisabeth Krueger and Alexis McCoy capturing second place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.13).
Five Aztecs then went on to claim top honors in their respective individual events. SDSU went one-two in the 100 breaststroke as Engzell won the race with a mark of 1:06.15, and was followed by teammate Jessica Morrill, who posted a lifetime best 1:06.75. The duo later flip-flopped positions in the 200 breast when Morrill touched the wall first with another personal record (2:21.58). Engzell came in right behind her in 2 minutes, 22.82 seconds.
Krueger, meanwhile, claimed the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.10. The freshman from Erlangen, Germany, also added second-place performances in the 100 fly (57.82) and the 200 individual medley (2:09.74).
Bojana Duric continued the Aztecs' successful day by swimming the 10th-fastest time in school history to claim the 500 free (5:04.47). In the next event, Vessey swam a lifetime best in the 100 fly, finishing in 57.50 to win the race.
Duric also chipped in with a second-place showing in the 1000 free (10:29.38), while Vessey (50 and 100 free) and Kelsy Diener (200 back) also tacked on a trio of third-place finishes.
Over in the diving events, Caitlin Atkinson took second on the 3-meter board with a score of 242.18, while Alex Barstad placed fourth (230.18) and Megan Flanagan finished in sixth (214.43). Barstad, meanwhile, was the Aztecs' top finisher in the 1-meter with her point total of 228.45, which was good enough for third.
The San Diego State divers will return to action next weekend when they head to the USC Trojan Diving Invitational in Los Angeles (Oct. 31-Nov. 1). The swimmers will remain at home to take on Fresno State in a non-conference dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 1, beginning at noon.
