ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Rodney Ferguson scored four touchdowns as New Mexico beat San Diego State (1-6, 0-3 MWC) Saturday in a 70-7 rout.
New Mexico (4-4 overall, 2-2 MWC) scored in bunches against the Aztecs.
Lobo cornerback Glover Quin intercepted a pass from freshman quarterback Ryan Lindley on the Aztecs' first possession and New Mexico needed just four plays to go 46 yards after Quin's pick. Quarterback Brad Gruner scored from the 20, igniting the Lobos' offense.
New Mexico's first half scores included a pair of 4-yard TD runs: a 5-yarder by Ferguson and a 13-yard TD run by Gruner after linebacker Carmen Messina recovered a fumble by Mekell Wesley on a kickoff return. Gruner also threw a 19-yard scoring pass to tight end Chris Mark with 23 seconds left in the first half.
Ferguson tied his career high with four TDs, the final one coming early in the third quarter on a 35-yard run.
San Diego State gave up 419 rushing yards and 565 total yards.
The Aztecs' only score came on a 15-yard pass to Darren Mougey with 7:30 left in the third quarter. San Diego State started the drive on their own 39-yard line and used seven plays to get to the New Mexico endzone.
Lindley made a big play on 3rd and 2, hitting Mougey for 22 yards and the first down. Brandon Sullivan then got the Aztecs out of another jam with a 17-yard rush to the New Mexico 15. Lindley then found Mougey in the endzone two plays later.
