MALIBU, Calif. - After breezing through day one of the ITA West-South Regionals at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the campus of Pepperdine University, the San Diego State men's tennis team failed to keep its momentum on Friday during second-day action.
Senior Bartosz Golas, the 15th-seeded singles player, was the lone Aztec to emerge with a victory and it didn't come easy. Golas won in straight sets over Leo Rosenberg of Hawai'i, but by scores of 7-6, 7-6.
Other than Golas, the five other Aztecs in singles action fell, albeit to seeded opposition. Tim Schulz van Endert fell in straight sets to fourth-seeded Matt Brooklyn of UCLA as did Luis Rattenhuber, who lost to ninth-seeded Omar Altmann of Pepperdine.
Matthew Tosches and Juan Gomez suffered the same fate they fell to Hawai'i's Andreas Weber, the No. 10 seed, and 14th-seeded Jason McNaughton of USC in two sets, respectively.
Besides Golas, Andre Feliz was the only Aztec to win a set as he posted a 6-2 victory in his first against 16th-seeded Abdullah Magdas of USC. However, Magdas rebounded to emerge victorious in the final two stanzas, 6-2, 7-6, to move on in the tournament.
Doubles action produced similar results for San Diego State on this day as both tandems went down in the round of 16. Golas and Gomez were 8-5 losers against Arizona's Pat Metham-Francois VanderMerve, while Schulz van Endert and Tosches went down, 8-4, to eighth-seeded Sascha Heinemann-Andreas Weber of Hawai'i.
Day-three action continues Saturday at 12:15 p.m. PT.
