SAN DIEGO - Five Aztecs were selected as members of Phil Steele's 2008 mid-season All-Mountain West Conference team. Russell Allen earned first-team honors for the second consecutive season, while B.J. Williams was a second-team choice. Additionally, Vincent Brown, Jonathan Soto and Aaron Moore earned third-team honors.
Allen (Oceanside, Calif.), SDSU's leading tackler in 2007, has 52 total tackles this year, including 7.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The senior team captain began has recorded three double-figure tackle games this year with two coming in the last two outings. Most recently, Allen had 13 tackles vs. Air Force and 11 at TCU. His first effort of 10 or more tackles came at San Jose State when he posted a season-high 14.
Williams (Aurora, Colo.), a sophomore defensive end, has 45 tackles to date in just six games after accumulating 45 in 12 games as a freshman. Williams has had at least nine tackles three times, including a career-best 10 at TCU. For the season, Williams also has 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Brown (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), a sophomore wide receiver, caught eight passes for 183 yards with three touchdowns in a win vs. Idaho. In the game vs. Cal Poly, Brown caught a then season-high seven passes for 98 yards. Through six games, Brown has 30 receptions for 381 yards and four touchdowns. The sophomore needs just one reception to match his freshman season total and has already surpassed his last year's receiving yard total by 32 yards.
Soto, a junior from West Covina, Calif., matched his total tackles from last season in just six games with 35. For the season, the defensive lineman has 3.5 tackles for loss, along with 2.5 sacks. He recorded a career-best eight tackles against Cal Poly, then matched that performance with eight stops against TCU.
Returning starting corner back, Moore, has tallied 24 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and one interception this season. The junior from Tampa, Fla., had a career day against San Jose State when he ran back an interception 28 yards for his first career touchdown, while also collecting a career-high nine tackles.
The Aztecs' next game is Saturday, Oct. 18, when they take on New Mexico at 3 p.m. PT.
