SAN DIEGO - The Aztec basketball team played host to a clinic Wednesday evening for the San Diego Senior Women's Basketball Association at Cox Arena. About 40 players from the league, which includes women from 50 years old to 80-plus, turned out for the event.

SDSU head coach Beth Burns and Aztec players were on hand to run through fundamental drills for about two hours. Not only was the clinic an opportunity for the women to improve their skills, it also gave the Aztecs a chance to interact with the women who paved the way for them in the pre-Title IX era.

"What an incredible experience for all of us," Burns said. "Our team was very impressed and motivated to be surrounded by this group of truly exceptional women. Not only did everyone have a fabulous time, it totally heightened our athletes' respect and awareness of those who had gone before them. Every clinic participant was pre-Title IX. Thanks to their efforts, we now have such great opportunities."

The San Diego Senior Women's Basketball Association competes at the Mission Valley YMCA and has previously won numerous medals at national championships, including the Senior Olympics.

"It was our honor and pleasure to put on a clinic for the SWBA," Burns added. "Cox Arena was filled with people passionate about basketball, and we will make this joint partnership of Aztecs and SWBA an annual event."
