SAN DIEGO -
Aztec Basketball Community Outreach Photo Gallery
The Aztec women's basketball team was out in force this past weekend, devoting its time and reaching out to the San Diego community, as part of its on-going relationships with the Girl Scouts and the United States Marine Corps.
On Wednesday, four Aztec freshmen, Gabrielle Clark, Lindsay Leo, Kalena Tutt and Adrienne Vita, along with sophomore Coco Davis, traveled to Girl Scout headquarters in Balboa Park to help stuff participant "goodie" bags for the Girl Scouts' Run/Walk for a New Day.
The actual race, which benefited the Girl Scouts "Healthy Girls Heathly Lives" programs, took place Saturday morning at Liberty Station in Pt. Loma. The team served in a variety of capacities at the event, working the registration tent, collecting bib numbers and directing runners on the course. The event helped raise awareness of the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
On Friday night, the team was recognized at a special reception at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot near downtown San Diego. About 300 people attended the outdoor event, including community sports figures and local military leaders who were all dressed in sports-related attire. The Aztecs were guests of Brigadier General Angie Salinas, commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region.
The Marine Corps band will be on hand for the team's game with UC Riverside on Thursday, Dec. 4, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets will be distributed to local Marines prior to the game and anyone who presents their military ID the night of the game can receive up to four free general admission tickets.
San Diego State's Girl Scouts Night is Wed., Jan. 7, as the Aztecs take on the Air Force Academy for their 2009 Mountain West Conference opener, which will be broadcast live nationally on CBS College Sports, beginning at 6 p.m. PT. Girl Scouts of San Diego County will receive free tickets to attend the game with the Falcons.
