BREMERTON, Wash. - San Diego State sophomore Johan Carlsson shot a 1-over 73 over the final 18 holes en route to a 2-under 214 score to finish in second place at the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash. Carlsson, who began the day in a tie for third place, was just one of two players to finish under par for the tournament. As a team, SDSU maintained its third-place position from the previous day after shooting a final round 6-over 294 to finish the invite with a three-round total of 15-over par (294-291-294--879).
Carlsson was able to move up one spot on the leaderboard thanks to his steady play on holes 2-16. After bogeying the par-4 1st, the sophomore made par on 15 straight holes before posting a five on the par-4 17th. Carlsson put the finishing touches on his first tournament of the year by closing with a birdie on 18 to finish at 1-over for the tournament. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native finished behind only Chris Killmer of Washington (-5).
One spot behind Carlsson was Andrew Cooley, who finished in a tie for third place with three others thanks to his consistent play. Competing as an individual, Cooley entered the third round in eighth place at even par and moved up five spots after shooting a par-72 to finish at even for the invitational.
Freshman J.J. Spaun also had a nice showing to wrap up tournament play as he, too, fired an even-par 72. After shooting rounds of 74 and 75 on Monday, Spaun climbed eight spots to finish in a tie for 14th at 5-over (221).
Two shots behind Spaun was Matt Hoffenberg, the fourth Aztec to place in the top 20. The sophomore ended the tourney in a tie for 20th place with a three-round score of 223 (+7). Hoffenberg started the round with a bogey and then proceeded to make birdie on five of the next 10 holes before a double, triple and two bogeys doomed him on Nos. 14-17. He finished the day with a 3-over 75.
Much like SDSU's other freshmen, first-year Aztec Alex Kang rebounded nicely from a pair of 76's on Monday by shooting a 2-over 74. Kang managed to move up in a tie for 32nd after beginning the day in a tie for 39th. He finished the tournament with a 10-over 226.
The last of the San Diego State contingent was David Palm, who could never find his rhythm and finished with a 7-over 79 and ultimately concluded the tournament with an 11-over 227 (t-35th).
The Aztecs will return to action Oct. 20-21 when they play host to the Sycuan Collegiate in El Cajon, Calif.
