The San Diego State women's golf squad posted its best team score in over four and a half years Monday morning, starting off the 2008 Heather Farr/CU Memorial Invitational with a first round 5-over-par 293 at the par-72, 6,211-yard Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo. The Aztecs followed up their stellar first round with a 302 to stand in ninth place overall at 19-over 595, just one stroke in back of eighth place Fresno State through 36 holes.
SDSU's top four golfers in the morning round all finished with sub-75 scores, including two, senior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) and sophomore Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.), who both ended up at even-par 72. The team's 293 is its best 18-hole score since carding a 292 at the 2004 Mountain West Conference championships in late April.
The Aztecs' top golfer through 36 holes is freshman Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who is tied for 11th place at even-par 144. Enarsson logged her second sub-70 round in just her second career tournament with a 69, including six birdies, after posting an opening round 75.
"I was more focused and more aggressive on the pins (in the second round)," Enarsson said. "I played really defensive in the first round and didn't trust my game. My goal for any tournament is to try to win, and I knew I needed to finish under par.
"As far as the team, we all got together yesterday and talked about our goals - both as a team and as individuals - and also went over the course. I think that really helped us."
Sophomore Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) is five strokes behind Enarsson in 30th place with a 149, highlighted by an opening round 74. Kamimura, meanwhile, is in 37th place at 6-over 150, followed by Arcala, who is in 53rd with a 153. The Aztecs' third San Diego-area native, junior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.), is tied for 93rd place with a 161
San Diego State will play the third and final round Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT with a shotgun start.
