SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team combined a well-balanced offensive attack with a solid defensive effort to blank San Jose State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs improve to 4-5-1 and are a perfect 3-0 at home, while the Spartans fall to 2-5-3 on the season.

Sophomore co-captain Cat Walker got the Aztecs on the board at the 8:58 mark with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The Folsom, Calif., native took a right to left cross from freshman Tiffany Hurst and buried the ball into the bottom of the net.

Neither team was able to add to the point total in the first half, giving SDSU the 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

San Diego State quickly took control of the game in the second period, finding the back of the net on its third attempt of the half. Sophomore keeper Aubree Southwick gave freshman Gretel Amman a nice ball on a long punt as Amman was able to chip it over Spartan goalkeeper Nina Butera and into the goal in the 62nd minute of action.

The Aztecs wasted no time in tacking on one more score with junior Heather Vandevanter lobbing a shot over Butera from 14 yards out just 54 seconds later. Vandevanter's goal was her second in as many games, while freshman Megan McQueeny earned her first career assist.

SDSU dominated the second half, out shooting SJSU, 9-3, to finish the day with a 12-8 overall advantage in attempts. Britney Bennett, who came in late in the game, led the way with four shots, while Vandevanter had two. Southwick played the entire 90 minutes inbetween the posts, earning her second shutout of the season.

San Diego State will open Mountain West Conference action at home this Friday (Oct. 3) against UNLV. The contest will get underway at 4 p.m. PT and will be televised live on The Mtn. The Aztecs will then return to the field on Sunday, Oct. 5, when they host Loyola Marymount in their final non-conference game of the season.
