FULLERTON, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead, but was unable to tame Cal State Fullerton's offense in a 3-1 loss at Titan Stadium on Friday night.

CSUF, which was winless in its last five outings, improves to 5-4-1, while the Aztecs fall to 3-5-1.

SDSU dented the scoreboard first in the 21st minute as junior Heather Vandevanter tallied her second goal of the year. Jillian Riker took the corner from the left side and swung it into the box for Vandevanter, who buried the header into the right side netting to give the Aztecs the early lead. Riker's assist was her third in the Aztecs' last two games.

San Diego State's lead was short-lived, however, as the Titans came storming back to knot the score at one on a goal from Stacey Fox with 18:57 remaining in the half.

Coming out of the break, CSUF quickly took a two-point lead, scoring on back-to-back corner kicks. Jenae Gibbons headed in the game-winning goal at the 51:18 mark before Fox struck for the second time of the evening just 1:46 later.

The Aztecs had a chance to get back in the scoring column in the 81st minute when freshman Taylor Canatsey made a good move down the line and then cut the ball back to the box for an open look, but her shot missed just wide.

The Scarlet and Black led in the shot column by a 12-10 count and was paced by Riker, Vandevanter, Cat Walker and Michaela DeJesus, who all recorded two attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Aubree Southwick had four saves in the loss.

San Diego State will return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 28, when it welcomes San Jose State to SDSU Sports Deck for its final tune-up before opening Mountain West Conference action on Oct. 3. The Aztecs-Spartans match is set to get underway at noon PT.
