SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team went on an offensive tear in the second half, snapping a two-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over UC Riverside Friday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. Freshman Gretel Amman, junior Millie Allen and senior Alicia Piz all found the back of the net for the Aztecs, while senior Jillian Riker tallied two assists.

It looked like the game would be a defensive battle after an evenly played first half ended in a scoreless tie. UC Riverside held the slight advantage in shot attempts (8-7), but neither team was able to take control on the offensive end.

The Highlanders then opened the scoring within just five minutes of action after the break when Tessa Lennala's shot from 25 yards out rolled off Aztec goalkeeper Aubree Southwick's fingertips and into the bottom left corner.

SDSU, which out shot UCR 12-3 in the second half, quickly responded as Amman headed in the tying goal off a cross from senior Jillian Riker on a set piece with 50:36 on the clock, marking Amman's first collegiate goal and Riker's first assist of the season.

Just over six minutes later, freshman Taylor Canatsey started to break away from her defender before she was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Aztecs. Allen stepped up for SDSU, drilling the ball into the upper left corner to secure the victory.

The Scarlet and Black tacked on one more score in the 78th minute when Riker set up Piz's shot from five yards out that ricocheted off the post and into the goal.

Sophomore Cat Walker led all players with five shots, while junior Heather Vandevanter totaled four attempts, including three on goal. Southwick, meanwhile, played the entire game in front of the net, notching four saves.

Sarah Mohammadi and Lauren Leonard paced the Highlander attack with three shots apiece, while goalkeeper Brittany Goetz had six saves.

San Diego State returns to action next weekend when it heads to Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 26, for a 7 p.m. match. The Aztecs will then be back at SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday (Sept. 28) to tangle with San Jose State at noon.
