SAN DIEGO (AP) -Andrew Gardner's 21-yard field goal as time expired lifted Cal Poly to a 29-27 victory over San Diego State Saturday night.
Gardner also booted a 23-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter but missed a 40-yard field goal attempt midway through the final.
Cal Poly was in control most of the night, building leads of 9-0, 16-7 and 23-14 leads thanks largely to quarterback Jonathan Dally, James Noble and Ryan Mole.
Dally completed 12 of 20 passes for 220 yards, threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, and directed a 63-yard touchdown drive in the final 3:39 of the game. That play also featured 29-yard run by Noble, who had 89 yards on 11 carries for the night. Mole rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.
San Diego State trailed 16-7 at halftime but pulled to within two points early in the third quarter when quarterback Ryan Lindley threw his second TD pass of the game, a 30-yard strike to Robert Wallace.
Lindley threw two more TD passes in the third quarter: a 30-yard pass to Robert Wallace and a 23-yard scoring strike to Vincent Brown.
San Diego State took its only lead of the night, 27-26, in the fourth quarter when quarterback Ryan Lindley directed a 77-yard scoring play drive capped off by Brandon Sullivan's five-yard run with 6:51 left.
Lindley completed 27 of 45 for 352 yards and three touchdowns. However, he threw two interceptions, which were among five turnovers for the Aztecs. He set school records for yards, completions and TDs for a freshman quarterback in his first start.
