SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team (1-1-0) picked up its first victory of the season by defeating Cal Poly, 1-0, in a non-conference match at Alex G. Spanos Stadium Friday night. Junior forward Jessica Gordon scored the game-winner on an unassisted goal in the first half.
"We put together our best effort so far this season," said Aztec head coach Mike Friesen. "We worked hard for the whole 90 minutes and were more physical than we had been previously, which is a big reason for getting the win tonight."
San Diego State had a chance to take the lead at the 19:26 mark when sophomore Cat Walker was taken down in the box, giving the Scarlet and Black a penalty shot. Junior Allie Crowson stepped up to take the kick for SDSU but drilled the ball off the left post.
The Aztecs stayed focused, however, with Gordon's goal coming just over six minutes later. The Tujunga, Calif., native lobbed a shot into the upper right corner from 15 yards out for the only score of the game and the third of her career.
"Jessica made a nice turn on the left side and shot it to the far post in the upper corner," Friesen said. "We actually had more chances to take a bigger lead, but overall I am pleased with the effort."
Gordon led the attack with three shots, while five others Aztecs took one. Sophomore Aubree Southwick anchored the defensive effort with six saves, recording her first shutout of the season. The Danville, Calif., native is now in sole possession of fourth place in the SDSU record books with 11 career shutouts.
Cal Poly (0-3-0) held a 14-8 advantage in shots taken, with Tiffany Gummow firing a game-leading four shots. Goalkeeper Coral Hoover recorded five saves in the loss.
San Diego State will return to action on Sunday (Aug. 31) when it hosts Arizona State. The Aztecs' home opener will get underway at 1 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck.
