SDSU Football Names Team Captains for 2008

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head coach Chuck Long announced the Aztecs' team captains for the upcoming season Saturday afternoon. Seniors Russell Allen (linebacker), Corey Boudreaux (defensive back), Tyler Campbell (fullback), Siaosi Fifita (defensive line), Darren Mougey (wide receiver) and Mike Schmidt (offensive line) were selected by their teammates and introduced at SDSU's Family Day scrimmage at Qualcomm Stadium.

Allen enters his final season as the most decorated of all the returning Aztecs. Last season, Allen was the team's top tackler, making 119 stops, including 5.5 for a loss. The Oceanside, Calif., native earned all-Mountain West Conference honorable mention honors after leading the league in tackles per conference outing (10.6) and ranking 33rd in the nation in overall tackles per game (9.9). Earlier this week, Allen was named to the Butkus Award Watch List for the second consecutive season.

Boudreaux, an Orange, Calif., native, started all 12 games for the Aztecs at free safety in 2007, finishing fourth on the squad with 84 tackles. He was seventh in the MWC with eight passes defended and was second on the team with three interceptions.

An Austin, Texas, native, Campbell logged minutes in all 12 games for the second straight season in 2008. He scored two touchdowns on seven carries and also saw significant playing time in the special teams.

Fifita has been a key player over the past three seasons for SDSU, logging minutes in 35 career contests with 10 starts. Last season, the Van Nuys, Calif., native appeared in all 12 games with eight starts on the defensive line. He had a career-best 29 tackles, including six behind the line of scrimmage and three sacks.

A Scottsdale, Ariz., native, Mougey appeared in 10 games in 2008 as a wide receiver after being the No. 2 quarterback the previous two seasons. He made an immediate impact as the team's third-leading receiver with 32 catches for 368 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Schmidt, a San Diego native, started all 12 games last season after appearing in 11 in the 2006 campaign. He anchored a line which racked up 3,272 yards through the air and 1,247 yards on the ground.

The Aztecs kick off their season at Qualcomm Stadium Aug. 30 (6:30 p.m.) against Cal Poly. SDSU season and single-game tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Aztec ticket office at Qualcomm Stadium or by calling (619) 293-SDSU (7378).
