This year's men's home schedule includes dates with preseason top-25 pick and NIT participant Arizona State, NCAA Tournament participant San Diego, longtime rival Fresno State along with UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge, which both finished in a three-way tie for first place during the Big West Conference regular season in 2007-08. Also included is UC San Diego, whom the Aztecs have played seven out of the last eight years. Additionally, San Diego State is expected to add one more non-league game to its 2008-09 home schedule.
Following SDSU's non-conference schedule, the Aztecs will play an eight-game MWC slate against the likes of NCAA Tournament participants Brigham Young and UNLV, along with New Mexico and Utah, which played in the NIT and CBI, respectively.
With the anticipation of five starters returning, the SDSU men also expect to have its top eight scorers back from a team that recorded its third straight 20-win season and its third consecutive trip to the postseason last year. Among those returning are all-conference performers Lorrenzo Wade, Ryan Amoroso and Billy White.
On the Aztec women's side, the third annual San Diego Surf `N Slam highlights their 2008-09 home schedule as SDSU will take on Sacramento State and will face either perennial power Texas or UTEP in the second game of the event. Both Lone Star State schools won more than 21 games and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
Also on the slate are four schools that finished in the top three of their respective conferences in 2007-08. Northwestern State makes the trip to Montezuma Mesa after finishing in a tie for second place in the Southland Conference, while UC Riverside is coming off a third-place effort in the Big West. Loyola Marymount of the West Coast Conference and Montana State of the Big Sky will also visit Cox Arena after both finished in a tie for third in league play a year ago.
After completing the non-conference portion of its schedule, SDSU will play eight Mountain West home games against the likes of NCAA Tournament participants New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming and WNIT selection TCU.
In addition to having four returning starters, the Aztec women's basketball team welcomes back a trio of all-league picks off a team that posted its highest conference finish in nine years of the MWC and increased its win total for the second straight season.
Starting times and dates will be announced later once both schedules are finalized.
