SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztecs Day will be held on June 27 at the San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. SDSU head baseball coach Tony Gwynn will speak at the event, along with men's basketball head coach Steve Fisher and head football coach Chuck Long. In addition, numerous student-athletes will be in attendance.
The event will be emceed by John Maffei, a reporter for the North County Times and the Escondido Times Advocate for more than 30 years. A 1970 graduate of San Diego State, Maffei played baseball for the Aztecs. Maffei has covered two World Series and last year was in Cooperstown, N.Y., to cover the Hall of Fame induction for Tony Gwynn.
The day kicks off at noon in a special meet and greet with various Aztec coaches and players. Numerous teams will be represented, including the SDSU softball team, which won the Mountain West Conference title for the fourth time in seven seasons in 2008. SDSU cheerleaders, the pep band and the Aztec Warrior will also be on hand for a special pep rally beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Aztec athletic department also has a booth set up at the fairgrounds, located adjacent to Bing Crosby Hall. The booth, which began on June 14 and will run through the conclusion of the fair on July 6, will have information on upcoming SDSU athletic events, highlight videos, the Aztec Warrior, and posters and schedule cards from your favorite San Diego State teams.
