SAN DIEGO - Middle blocker Lauren Salisbury was named the MVP of the 2007 San Diego State volleyball team, an award she received at the team's annual banquet at the end of the school year. In addition, senior setter Kristen Castillo was presented with the Aztec Award for her leadership throughout the fall campaign. A special presentation was also made to senior Aime Cordeiro for the dig records she set during her four seasons at SDSU.
Salisbury, a freshman from Southlake, Texas, led the Aztecs with a .300 hitting percentage and an average of 1.38 blocks per game. She was also second on the squad in points with 374 for an average of 3.40 per game. Her attack percentage ranked ninth in the Mountain West Conference while she finished fourth in the league in blocking.
Castillo, who shared setting duties during her senior campaign, earned the Aztec Award as a player that the coaches and teammates could rely upon in any situation. The award honored her leadership abilities and the positive manner in which she represented the SDSU volleyball team throughout the 2007 season. Castillo concluded her Aztec career ranked sixth on the career assist list with 2,640.
Cordeiro received special recognition after setting the career, season and match records for digs during her four seasons at San Diego State. Her 46 digs vs. Northern Illinois on Sept. 8 established a new SDSU and Mountain West Conference records and came in just four games. She also set the Aztec single-season mark with a total of 658 digs last fall, breaking the old mark of 545 set by Jackie Mendez during the 1988 campaign. Additionally, her four-year total of 1,956 digs broke Mendez's old record of 1,682 which she accumulated from 1985 through 1988.
