DES MOINES, Iowa - San Diego State senior Sherraine Pencil and freshman Briana Johnson fell short of advancing to the semifinal round of their respective events on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Pencil, competing for the second straight day after racing in the prelims of the 400-meter dash on Wednesday, finished Heat 4 in sixth place with a 200-meter time of 24.20 seconds. Overall, the Toronto, Canada, product recorded the 27th-fastest time in the field and finished her Aztec career having made three consecutive appearances at the NCAA outdoor meet. As a sophomore in 2006, Pencil was a part of SDSU's national-qualifying 4x400-meter relay team and then appeared at the national meet last season in search of an NCAA title in the 200 and 400, before securing berths in the same two races this year.
In the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, Johnson posted a time of 13.92 to finish in fifth place in the event's third heat. Unfortunately for Johnson, she was .52 seconds shy of advancing to the semifinals and came in 24th overall. The race caps a freshman season in which she recorded three straight, and four out of her last five, sub-14-second races. Prior to her 13.72 performance in the prelims at the Mountain West Conference Championships, Johnson had never broken the 14-second barrier in 11 races to open the outdoor campaign.
San Diego State returns to the track tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT when junior Kristin Olafsdottir competes in the first four events of the heptathlon. Later in the day, junior Decontee Kaye will participate in the qualifying round of the triple jump (7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT), while sophomore Stephanie Bagan will look to claim SDSU's first NCAA title since 1985 when she participates in the finals of the pole vault (7:30 p.m. CT/5:30 p.m. PT).
