SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State football standouts and current Los Angeles Avengers defensive back Terrell Maze and wide receiver J.R. Tolver will play Monday, June 9, on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. PT. The Avengers will host the Utah Blaze in tonight's game.
Maze a four-year letterwinner for the Aztecs from 2003-06, played in 42 games for the Aztecs, finishing with 136 tackles, 20 pass breakups and four interceptions. Maze was SDSU's fifth-leading tackler during his senior season with 57 stops, including 43 solo efforts. He was also second on the team with seven pass breakups and added one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Following the 2005 season, Maze received honorable mention all-Mountain West Conference recognition as a junior.
During his collegiate career as an Aztec, Tolver amassed 262 receptions for 3,572 yards and 17 touchdowns. As a senior, he led the Aztecs with 28 catches for 1,785 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning unanimous selection to the All-Mountain West Conference first team. Tolver also was named to a pair of All-America squads after leading the nation with 137 receiving yards per game (13.9 yards per catch) and finishing second nationally with nearly nine catches per contest. In addition, he led San Diego State in scoring (86 points) and was named the MWC football Player of the Week three times (the first came after a 12-catch, 296-yard performance against Arizona State).
Maze and Tolver are two of six former Aztecs playing in the Arena Football League this season, which ranks San Diego State in a tie for second among colleges with active players on AFL rosters.
The last time these two teams matched up, the Avengers came out on top with a score of 79-62. With three games left in the regular season, the Avengers (4-9) are looking for another victory against the Blaze.
