The No. 19/21 San Diego State softball team shut out New Mexico, 1-0, on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium. The victory was the school-record tying 41st of the season for the Aztecs (41-15), who remained in first place in the Mountain West Conference at 13-5, one game ahead of Brigham Young (11-5).
It was the fourth consecutive one-run victory for SDSU, which is now 11-2 over its last 13 contests.
One of three seniors to be honored in a postgame ceremony (along with Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) and Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.)), Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) (28-12) continued her dominance in the circle with nine strikeouts over seven innings en route to her 27th complete game of the season. Ross allowed just three singles, two of which came in the seventh, and a walk to lower her season ERA to 0.99.
San Diego State got the lone run of the game in the fourth after junior Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS) led off with a double to right-center and was replaced at second by sophomore Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS). Following a deep fly out to right field by McDonald that allowed Quichocho-Rosario to get to third, sophomore Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) doubled down the left field line for the only run the Aztecs would need.
Sophomore Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) reached twice on a single and a walk, while junior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) drew a walk and stole a base in the first.
SDSU wraps up its regular season at UNLV with a game at 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES: SDSU tied a school-record with its 41st victory, but did it in the least amount of games at 41-15. The 2002 squad finished 41-22-1, while the 2001 team was 41-25 ... The Aztecs are on pace to break school records in overall win percentage (.732 this season, record is .694 in 2006), home win percentage (.821 this season, record is .769 in 2006) and road win percentage (.700 this season, record is .692 in 2006) ... CF Tamani Wells passed Tracey Stowe (1990-92) as the school's all-time leader with her 51st sacrifice bunt ... The sac bunt was her 21st of the season, tied with Joann Figueroa (2002) for third-most in a single-season ... LHP Christina Ross earned her 26th career shutout to move into second on the all-time chart, two behind Sandra Durazo's 28 from 1998-2001 ... It was her 12th shutout this year, tying Celena Velasquez' single-season mark set in 2005 ... It was also Ross' 47th appearance of the season, tied with Durazo for the most in a single campaign ... RF Brittany Knudsen drew her 25th walk of the year to move into a tie with Stowe for fourth on the single-season list ... Redshirt junior Monica Alnes performed a stirring rendition of the National Anthem prior to the game ... The Aztecs are 15-8 in one-run games, 36-3 when they score first and 29-1 when they lead after five innings.
