SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's golfer Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) carded a 3-over par 75 Monday at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif., to advance to the sectional qualifier for the 2008 United States Women's Open Golf Championship.
Kamimura, who recently completed her junior campaign with the Aztecs, tied for the second-best score on the day with four others, just two strokes behind Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., who logged a 1-over 73. Kamimura was among 30 amateur and professional golfers to qualify in Yorba Linda for one of the seven sectionals, scheduled for Monday, June 9. She will play 36 holes at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., for the chance to participate in the 2008 U.S Women's Open on June 26-29, at the Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn.
One of the Aztecs' two team captains last season, Kamimura previously advanced to the U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifying round during the summer of 2005, before beginning her career on Montezuma Mesa.
