PHILADELPHIA - The San Diego State varsity eight boat wrapped up its 2007-08 season in fine fashion with a first-place finish in the petite final at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the shores of Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.

The Aztecs won the six-boat race with a time of 6 minutes, 35.868 seconds, easily outdistancing runner-up Fordham (6:44.725). UConn (6:44.970), Alabama (6:46.888), St. Mary's (6:50.390) and UC Irvine (6:55.263). Overall, SDSU was seventh of 40 boats.

Earlier in day, San Diego State narrowly missed qualifying for the grand final by finishing third of six boats in semifinal heat four. The Aztecs raced to a time of 6:18.929, less than a second behind St. Joseph's (6:18.397). UC Davis won the heat in 6:15.871.

"We are disappointed that we didn't make the grand final," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "We felt like we raced hard enough with a great time to earn a spot but just missed it in the semifinals. Overall I am happy and excited for our future since the majority of this team will be back (next year)."
