SDSU CREW HEADS TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR WIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS
* The well-rested San Diego State rowing team heads back to the water on Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif., for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships this weekend, May 3-4.
The Aztecs' novice four will kick things off at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday in the third of three heats. SDSU's varsity eight will follow at 11 a.m. in the second of two heats. At 11:30 a.m. will be the Aztecs' novice eight boat, which will be racing in heat one of three. SDSU's second varsity eight closes out the preliminary heats on day one with a 2 p.m. start.
Following the heats, the finals are scheduled for Sunday with SDSU's second novice eight slated to race in that event's final at 9 a.m.

A LOOK BACK AT THE 2007 WIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS
* The San Diego State rowing team advanced three boats to the grand final on the first day of the WIRA Championships Saturday on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
The Aztecs' stellar day was highlighted by the novice eight boat, which edged host Sacramento State by less than a second with a time of 7 minutes, 19.8 seconds.
Also impressive was the junior varsity eight boat, which took second with a time of 7:02.1, over 13 seconds ahead of third-place Western Washington.
In the varsity eight race, SDSU finished third at 6:56.6, advancing to the grand final at 11:50 a.m. Sunday.
In other action, SDSU's varsity four boat took fifth of six in its heat with a time of 8:09.6 and will compete in the third final on Sunday.
The San Diego State rowing team wrapped up the WIRA Championships with a bronze medal by the second novice eight boat the next morning. Three other Aztec boats finished among the top five in their respective Grand Final race.
SDSU's second novice eight finished third in the Grand Final with a time of 7 minutes, 54.7 seconds, well ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara (8:15.9).
The Aztec second varsity eight and novice eight each took fourth in their event. The second varsity eight rowed to a time of 7:12.3, while the novice eight (7:21.6) was edged by Humbolt State (7:21.3) for third place.
In varsity eight action, SDSU took fifth with a time of 7:02.4, narrowly beating Loyola Marymount (7:03.9).
LAST TIME OUT WITH THE AZTECS
* The San Diego State rowing team won four of the six races at the San Diego City Championships on April 12 on Mission Bay in San Diego. The Aztecs picked up firsts in the second varsity eight race and all three novice events.
In the second varsity eight race, SDSU took first of three with a time of 6 minutes, 15.0 seconds, narrowly edging second-place San Diego (6:16.6) by less than two seconds. UC San Diego was third in 7:08.0
San Diego State also picked up victories in the novice eight, second novice eight and novice four races. In the novice eight race, the Aztecs clocked in with a time of 6:32.9, followed by UC San Diego (6:45.18) and San Diego (6:55.9).
SDSU won the second novice eight race in 6:52.8, outdistancing San Diego (7:09.3) and UC San Diego (7:27.21), and was victorious by a large margin in the novice four race (San Diego State - 7:36.4, UC San Diego - 8:12.8, UC San Diego Lightweights - 8:37.4).
The Aztecs also picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the varsity eight race and in the varsity four event, trailing only San Diego in 6:17.5 and 7:30.9, respectively.
A LOOK AHEAD
* The Aztecs will close out their 2008 campaign next week (May 9-10), when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., on the shores of the Schuylkill River to compete in the Dad Vail Regatta.
