SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State crew team had an impressive first day at the 35th annual San Diego Crew Classic Saturday on the Crown Point Shores at Mission Bay, San Diego, Calif. The varsity eight boat won its heat to advance to Sunday's grand final, while the novice eight boat took second in its heat to qualify for Sunday's grand final as well. In addition, the second novice eight boat took first of three to win its race.
In the varsity eight race, the Aztecs finished first of seven boats in the second heat with a time of 6 minutes, 46.01 seconds, more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Kansas State (6:51.26). Temple (6:53.73), Lehigh (6:57.77), Villanova (6:59.38), St. Joseph's (7:04.41) and Arizona State (7:20.17) rounded out the competition. The varsity eight boat will now race in Sunday's grand final at 10:40 a.m.
The second varsity eight boat wasn't as fortunate as it finished sixth of seven in the second heat with a time of 7:14.37. The boat will now row in the petite final at 8 a.m. Sunday.
SDSU's novice eight boat raced neck and neck with Washington throughout the entire race to finish second of six boats in heat three. San Diego State had a time of 7:06.85, just seconds back from the Huskies' 7:04.6. Clemson (7:10.69), St. Joseph's (7:14.47), UCLA (7:22.38) and Sacramento State (7:29.82) also competed in the race. With the runner-up finish, the Aztecs will now race in Sunday's grand final at 11:20 a.m.
Rounding out San Diego State's impressive day was the second novice eight boat, which easily won the three-boat race with a time of 7:27.20. San Diego and UC San Diego followed in 7:47.33 and 8:08.86, respectively.
