The No. 19 San Diego State softball team fell to Utah, 2-1, in eight innings Saturday afternoon at Ute Field in Salt Lake City. With the loss, the Aztecs (37-15) dropped into a tie for second place with the Utes (26-21) at 9-5 in Mountain West Conference play. Brigham Young is a game up on each team at 10-4.

Meghan Crouse scored the game-winning run for Utah in the bottom of eighth inning on a wild pitch with two strikes on batter Kara Foster.

Senior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) (24-12) was the tough luck loser after allowing two runs (one earned) on just three hits and a walk over 7 2/3 innings. She also struck out six.

SDSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Senior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) hit a one-out single to center field, stole second and moved to third on an illegal pitch. Junior Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) then scored Wells on an infield single with her team-leading 35th RBI of the season.

The Utes didn't get their first hit until the third inning but it was a big one as Devina Quintero singled to right field to score Diana Phillips, who had reached after being hit by a pitch.

San Diego State's Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) doubled to lead the offense, while Wells, Floros, senior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) and freshman Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each added singles.

The Aztecs, who finished their nine-game road trip with a 7-2 record, will return to Montezuma Mesa Friday for a doubleheader against Colorado State beginning at 5 p.m.
