SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State All-American Erin Asay currently ranks No. 2 in the world and in the United States in the pole vault after clearing 15 feet, 1 inch on Friday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.
Asay, SDSU's first indoor All-American and former Mountain West Conference champion, won the pole vault open event by clearing 15 feet for the first time. In addition, her performance was over a foot better than the competition's second-place competitor (Brysun Stately, 13-8.25).
Asay is second in the world and American rankings only to April Steiner, who vaulted 15-2.25 in Norman, Okla., back on April 12. The two are the only women in the U.S. to clear at least 15 feet.
Asay is currently slated to compete at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., along with current Aztec sophomore Stephanie Bagan, who achieved the B standard at the Sea Ray Relays earlier this season. The 2008 Trials are scheduled for June 27-July 6 at Hayward Field.
