The No. 19 San Diego State softball team racked up a 13-3, five-inning victory over Utah Friday afternoon at Ute Field in Salt Lake City, Utah. With the win, the Aztecs (37-14) moved into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference at 9-4, while the Utes dropped to 25-21 and 8-5. Brigham Young is ½ games behind SDSU and plays UNLV at 7 p.m. MT.
San Diego State racked up its 13 runs on 12 hits and nine walks. It was the most runs scored by an Aztec team since they scored 21 times against New Mexico on April 23, 2006.
Junior Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS), junior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) and freshman Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the offense. Senior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) added two hits, two runs and two RBI, while sophomore Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, the Aztecs exploded with six runs in the second and seven in the third.
In the second, Knudsen and Wells each drew a bases loaded walk for SDSU's first runs of the game. McCorkle followed with a two-run double to put San Diego State up, 4-0. After Wells scored from third on a wild pitch, Floros doubled down the left-field line to score McCorkle with the team's sixth run of the inning.
Angie Boardman's single in the second plated Kara Foster to get Utah on the board.
It was more of the same for the Aztecs, however, in the third inning they tacked on seven more runs on six hits and two walks. Wells' bunt single scored Wisneski for their first run and McCorkle's line drive single off the Ute shortstop knocked in Knudsen, who had reached on a double to left-center field. Floros followed with a two-run double down the left-field line which scored both Wells and McCorkle. Floros advanced to third on a wild pitch and senior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) drew a walk, putting runners at the corners with one out. After freshman Taylor Sutton (Gilroy, Calif.) got out on a fielder's choice groundout that kept Floros at third, Beasley connected on a 3-1 pitch and lifted it over the right-center field fence giving SDSU its 11th, 12th and 13th runs of the game.
Utah got its final two runs when Kelly Matthews scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Diana Phillips hit a solo homer to center in the fifth.
Beasley (7-2) picked up the win for San Diego State after scattering two runs on three hits and a walk over three innings of relief. She struck out four. Senior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) started the game for the Aztecs and allowed just one run on two hits over two innings. Five of her six outs were strikeouts.
SDSU wraps up its nine-game road trip with a contest against Utah tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 1 p.m.
