San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) fired a 4-under par 67 on Thursday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championships at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort. As a team, SDSU sits in sixth place after a shooting a combined 5-over 289 on the 7,136-yard, par-71 Catalina Course. UNLV finds itself perched atop the team standings after 18 holes, carding a 3-under 281 to take a two-shot lead over TCU (-1), followed by Brigham Young (+2), Colorado State (+4) and Utah (+4).
After his disappointing performance at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford last weekend, Goldberg came out strong on Thursday, draining four birdies over his first five holes en route to tying his second-best round of the spring. With his effort, the La Costa Canyon High alumnus grabbed a two-stroke advantage over Seung-su Han and Brett Kanda of UNLV, who both logged a 2-under 69 over the first 18 holes.
Freshman Johan Carlsson posted the Aztecs second-best score of the day, sinking five birdies to offset a quintet of bogeys en route to an even-par 71. With his total, the Gothenburg, Sweden, native remains four shots in back of Goldberg in a seven-way tie for seventh place in the 45-golfer field.
Meanwhile, fellow classmate Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) overcame a shaky start to end the day in a tie for 26th. The Aztec lefty suffered a double-bogey at the par-3 12th hole, but notched four pars and two birdies the rest of the way to finish at 3-over 74, just four strokes out of the top six.
Rounding out the SDSU lineup was senior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) and junior David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden), who each fired a 6-over 77 to wind up in the 37th position after 18 holes.
The Mountain West Conference Championships resume on Friday with second-round play as the Aztecs are scheduled to tee off with players from Colorado State and Utah starting at 7:50 a.m. PT. A live scoring link will be available on the home page of GoAztecs.com.
